چکیده

Objectives. One of the important causes of flap losses is ischemia-reperfusion damage. Arnebia species are rich in naphthoquinone derivatives which known to have anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of Arnebia purpurea extract on viability of the skin flaps. Methods. Eighteen Wistar rats were divided in three groups. Caudal-based 9×3 cm size skin flap was applied on dorsum of the all rats and following surgery, 2 cc of A. purpurea extract topically was applied to the group 1 and 2 cc of 0.2% Nitrofurazon cream topically was applied to the group 2, daily. The Group 3 only received flap surgery (control group). Seven days later, all subjects were euthanatized and necrosis rate in their flaps was calculated and compared to each other. Results. The necrosis rate was calculated as 20.25% ± 1.59% in Group 1, 32.05% ± 2.23% in the Group 2 and 37.33% ± 4.12% in the Group 3. It was found that necrosis rate in the Group 1 was statistically significantly less than Groups 2 and 3 (p < 0.001) and that difference in necrosis rate between Group 2 and Group 3 was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). Conclusion. Necrosis of skin flaps was reduced through topical application of A. purpurea extract.

Improved viability of random pattern skin flaps with the use of bone marrow mesenchymal-derived stem cells and chicken embryo extract

Objective(s): Covering tissue defects using skin flaps is a basic surgical strategy for plastic and reconstructive surgery. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of chicken embryo extract (CEE) and bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) on random skin flap survival (RSF) in rats. Using chicken embryo extract can be an ideal environment for the growth and proliferation ...

Oral administration of alanyl-glutamine and glutamine improve random pattern dorsal skin flap survival in rats

Objective(s): Skin flap necrosis is the most common postoperative side effect in reconstructive surgeries. Glutamine (GLN) has been shown to accelerate wound healing process. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of GLN either in free form or in the dipeptide form along with L- alanyl (Ala-GLN) on random skin flaps survival in rats.Materials and Methods: Dorsal skin flaps with c...

The Effect of Enoxaparin and Clopidogrel on Survival of Random Skin Flap in Rat Animal Model

BACKGROUND Necrosis of skin flaps is considered as an important complication in reconstructive surgery. We conducted an experimental study to investigate the efficacy of low-molecular weight heparin, clopidogrel and their combination to improve the flap survival. METHODS Forty male, adult Sprague-Dawlay rats were divided randomly into 4 groups. Standard rectangular, distally based dorsal ran...

Favorable effects of progesterone on skin random flap survival in rats

Objective(s): The aim of this study is to determine the effects of progesterone treatment on the survival of random skin flaps. Materials and Methods: McFarlane flaps were established and 40 male rats were randomly assigned to the progesterone-treated as the test group or normal saline-treated as the control group. Progesterone or normal saline (10 mg/kg) was administered intraperitoneally onc...

Fibroblast Growth Factor-1 vs. Fibroblast Growth Factor-2 in Ischemic Skin Flap Survival in a Rat Animal Model

BACKGROUND One of the main challenges in skin flap surgery is tissue ischemia and following necrosis. The present study compares the effects of fibroblast growth factors 1 and 2 on increasing cutaneous vasculature, improving ischemia, and preventing distal necrosis in ischemic skin flaps in rat model. METHODS Thirty rats were allocated into 3 groups (n=10) and 2×8 cm dorsal rando...
